Ask Not What Fruit Is In Your Beer

When I first heard about 21st Amendment brewing company's Hell or High Watermelon beer I turned a blind eye and made a bitter beer face. As most most people should when hearing people describe it as just "a watermelon beer" and being surrounded by people saying "watermelon beer? uhh...I don't know about that." Well I do know because I learned, and it's delicious! Now I'll try to teach you all.

Hell or high Watermelon is an American wheat beer that is about 4.9% alcohol. This special beer undergoes two fermentation processes. The second is where they incorporate real fresh watermelons not some flavored syrup. They use Two-row Pale and White Wheat for malt which also gives It a pale straw color. In case you were wondering they use Magnum hops.

21st amendment Brewery is a cool and unique entity on its own, taking their name from the amendment that repealed prohibition in the 1930's and housing their product in boldly illustrated cans. It was founded in 2000 by two San Franciscans Nico Freccia and Shaun O'Sullivan after researching the decreases in breweries in the San Francisco area compared to the 1900's.

So after hearing some buzz about Hell or High Watermelon I finally tried this mysterious beverage at a place called Bill's Bar & Burger located inside a Harrah's casino in Atlantic City, NJ(after 26 hours of gaming). After the first gulp it had the effect you would think 5 hour energy should have. It was like your taste-buds and sense of smell shot a message to your brain saying your face just got submerged(in a good way) into some delicious watermelon that can make you drunk. I have had it a few more times since then and each time it was refreshing, delicious, and much like the first time i drank it. Like most beers it's best when super cold.

  1. I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree, I like pretty much all types beers and even some of the fruity ones, but this beer is really bad. It's not that it was made poorly, 21st Amendment has some spectacular beers (check out @1st Amendment's Hop Crisis for one of the best beers I've ever had). It's not that they made the beer poorly or didn't combine the flavors "correctly", it's that watermelon has no business being in a beer. It tasted like a jolly rancher melted inside of a beer, not good. For a really good, fruity type, refreshing beer, try Ephemere Apple, that's one you can drink over and over. This Hell or High Watermelon, however, I bought at a taproom and didn't even finish it.
